Revision of 80-Year-Old Components

After 80 years of operation, each component shows different signs of wear and tear. The result: a revision with many challenges. As experienced manufacturer of large parts, Emmendingen-based WEHRLE-WERK AG takes on this task.

November 2019 – The pumped-storage power plant operator Schluchseewerk AG has assigned a part of the revision works for the Waldshut power plant to WEHRLE. As part of the regular revision, taking place every 20 to 25 years, two identical machine sets are to be repaired, which will enable the client from Wehr to operate the plant components built between 1942 and 1951 for another 20 to 25 years.

The project’s scope of supply not only includes the analysis and revision of the components but also the repair of different pump components. All in all, over 30 different components will be examined and processed by experienced experts.

From material procurement to component measurement, non-destructive material testing and machining technology, such as vertical lathes and drilling machines, WEHRLE carries out a variety of tasks. Besides the processing of large parts, the scope of supply includes manual works, such as welding and grinding. The mobile laser tracker is used for the precise measurement of the different large components with weights up to 20 t and maximum dimensions of ø 4.5 x 1.0 m. The project portfolio is rounded off with detailed documentation of the processing and testing of the 80-year-old components.

The revision of the pump machine sets will be carried out in WEHRLE’s factory halls from June to December 2020. WEHRLE’s experience in this field together with its broad manufacturing portfolio, including the variety of the machinery, the high welding quality and the reliable quality control, have been important decision factors to commission WEHRLE.
