Treatment of pharmaceutical production wastewater

TEVA – one of the world’s leading ten manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and owner of RATIOPHARM since 2010, as well as global market leader for generics – is investing approximately € 500 million for the large-scale production of state-of-the-art biotechnological active ingredients in Southern Germany. The new production line will manufacture monoclonal antibodies. They are one of the most advanced biotechnological active ingredients and offer a promising opportunity to reduce therapeutic gaps and thus improve people’s quality of life. On a total surface of 4,800 m², the potential of biotechnology for a better and more independent life can be exploited by using the latest technological standards.

In the course of an intensive selection process led by a renowned engineering firm from Southern Germany, WEHRLE’s creative and economically attractive wastewater treatment solution for the modernization and new construction of the entire effluent treatment plant was chosen among offers of several other well-known German competitors.

In addition to the BIOMEMBRAT® high-performance biological process, separation stages such as Nanofiltration and Evaporation as well as Dewatering stages for the biomass from two different wastewater lines will be used. The capacity of the existing neutralization plant will thus be quadrupled. Intelligently designed automation, control and network technology bundles all wastewater systems and ensures effective future-proof operation. A particular challenge is the implementation of the project during ongoing operation of the old plant, the most demanding part of plant engineering, for which WEHRLE can provide numerous successful references. The project works started in January 2021. According to the schedule, the last plant section will be handed over to the customer TEVA in spring 2023.

In 2020, WEHRLE was rated as one of the “Top 10 Pharma Solution Providers Germany“ by Pharma Tech Outlook magazine and has been listed as a Silver Medalist for Sustainability by Ecovadis, the world’s most trusted provider of corporate sustainability ratings, since early 2021.
