Wastewater treatment within the food industry
Biogas from Wastewater treatment within the food industry
2022 Dingolfing, Germany – WEHRLE provides the anaerobic wastewater treatment system BIODIGAT SB with integrated biogas production to mustard and delicatessen producer Develey
In March 2021, Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH, an international manufacturer of mustard, sauces and dressings and winner of the German Sustainability Award 2020, commissioned WEHRLE to design and implement a wastewater treatment plant with biogas generation. Just one year later, in the summer of 2022, the industrial water treatment plant was quickly biologically commissioned at 100% performance at the largest German production site in Dingolfing.

Initial situation
Like WEHRLE, Develey Senf & Feinkost GmbH is a family-run company that operates all over the world from its headquarters in Germany. The production process of the mustard, sauce and dressing manufacturer regularly generates production wastewater. To treat the wastewater, the Munich-based company was looking for a wastewater treatment concept that complies with the officially prescribed indirect discharge level of the downstream wastewater treatment plant, adapts to the successive expansion of the production site and supports the company's sustainability initiative at the Dingolfing site.
Solution approach and concept description
Following a concept study which compared various aerobic and anaerobic processes, WEHRLE worked with the customer to develop a holistic overall concept. In addition to careful wastewater treatment, it includes reliable purification of the water during peak loads in line with official requirements. Furthermore, the integrated biogas generation of the wastewater treatment plant together with a modern combined heat and power plant allows the generated biogas to be converted directly into electricity, which can be used directly on site. This allows customers to minimize their ecological footprint and save energy costs at the same time. The applied technology is the anaerobic high-performance BIODIGAT SB process. With its 3-phase separation system incorporating highly efficient biogas utilization and heat pump technology with maximized overall energy efficiency, the process meets all of the customer's requirements. In addition to the delivery and installation of the treatment plant, our company's scope of services also includes the commissioning of the high-performance BIODIGAT SB process. The customer is responsible for the construction technology and heat supply, including the associated heat exchange surfaces in the inlet and outlet.
Scope of delivery
- anaerobic high-performance BIODIGAT SB process
- post-aeration, gas storage
- biological desulphurization
- biogas cooling and condensate separation
- biogas flare
- process control system
- delivery and installation incl. commissioning
Impressions from Dingolfing
Commissioning
The successful commissioning of the new wastewater treatment plant was completed almost on time despite the difficult conditions caused by the pandemic. Initial evaluations confirm the excellent results of the plant operation. Just four weeks after inoculation of the plant with biomass, the performance is already 100%. The cleaning result and the gas yield show an increase of approx. 20-30% compared to the expected values. Intelligent control systems enable continuous operation of the biology and combined heat and power plant - twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
